BECA appoints Jon Hutchison as new Chair

The Business Events Council of Australia has appointed Jon Hutchison AM as the new independent Chair of the peak industry body effective 10 October 2011.


The Business Events Council of Australia has appointed Jon Hutchison AM as the new independent Chair of the peak industry body effective 10 October 2011.

After 30 years of dedicated service in the tourism industry,  the global industry leader Jon Hutchinson will now chair the Business Events Council of Australia 

As the recent Chief Executive Officer of Business Events Sydney, Jon Hutchison brings with him the experience of more than 30 years in the tourism industry gained through leadership in some of the country’s top tourism and travel organisations.

In 2006, Jon Hutchison was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to tourism and business through promoting Australia as a travel destination, and in leadership and advisory roles with industry organisations.

In May 2011 Jon Hutchison was honoured with an academy award as 2011 Global Leader at the world’s meetings and incentive industry’s premier event, IMEX in Frankfurt, Germany. Jon is an Adjunct Professor, School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism, Faculty of Business at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) , t the and is Chair of Australian Centre for Event Management and sits on the Advisory Board of the UTS Business School.

“The BECA Board is delighted to welcome Jon to the position of Chair and we are all looking forward to the leadership and commitment he will bring to the role and the organisation”, said BECA Executive Manager, Inge Garofani.

“Jon has a depth of knowledge and a strong passion for business events which will lead BECA forward at a time of challenge for the business events industry”.

Retiring Chair Leigh Harry has made an outstanding contribution to the business events industry and to BECA. Leigh has provided strong leadership to the organisation for the last year as Chair, and has been an active member of the board for over a decade.

Leigh will continue his contribution to business events in his new position as Chief Executive Officer, Tourism Victoria and Deputy Secretary, Tourism and Aviation, Department of Business and Innovation. BECA wishes Leigh every success in his new position and future career.
