HOW GCCEC TRANSFORMED THE GOLD COAST

The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, opened in 2004, transformed the city’s event landscape. Now celebrating 20 years, it has hosted 3,612 events, attracting millions and showcasing international talent.

Celebrating 20 Years

Cutting-edge design, world-class dining, and unforgettable events define the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC), a game-changer for the city since its opening on 29 June 2004. As GCCEC marks its 20th anniversary in 2024, we celebrate not just its impact, but also the community that built it.

A Game-Changer for the Gold Coast

Strategically located near the Gold Coast’s tourism trifecta—its skyline, beaches, and hinterland —GCCEC was established on a redeveloped site first earmarked in 1999. Little Tallebudgera Creek required realignment, new bridges were built, and the Gold Coast Highway was widened. This was just stage one. Once completed, the team delivered an architectural masterpiece catering to a global influx of guests.

After five years of meticulous planning, the centre opened as a stunning facility, just 500 metres from iconic beaches. It featured a main arena seating 6,000, a 3,000 square metre exhibition space, and ample parking, establishing GCCEC as a premier business events destination.

Expanding Horizons

As its reputation grew, so did the need for more space. In 2009, two additional exhibition halls, three meeting rooms, and 3,000 square metres of floor space were constructed.

As a result of the expanded facilities, GCCEC has hosted an extraordinary 3,612 events, with around 12 million attendee days. Its arrival marked a new era for business events on the Gold Coast, attracting diverse events.

For Microsoft Ignite Australia in 2015, which featured astronaut Buzz Aldrin as a keynote speaker, a full-scale go-kart track was constructed within the GCCEC carpark. In 2007, 6,000 Chinese Amway delegates enjoyed a five-course, lobster-laden meal in just 90 minutes. The centre also played a pivotal role during the 2018 Commonwealth Games, welcoming over 3,000 media representatives.

A Legacy of Excellence

Reflecting on 20 years of innovation and customer service, GCCEC remains unmatched in Australia. As former Queensland premier Peter Beattie said in 2004, it is a “magnet for tourism” and a “magnificent addition to the Gold Coast’s world-class attractions”.
