New net-zero guidelines for events industry

The Net Zero Carbon Events (NZCE) initiative has released new guidelines to assist the MICE industry achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The NZCE initiative is driven by the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC), which has published seven best-practice guidance and methodology documents to help deliver actionable insights and strategies for the industry on the path to net zero.

The seven documents were launched at ExCeL London on 11 December, 2023, and cover priority areas of venue energy; smart production and waste management; logistics; travel and accommodation; food and food waste; and offsetting and measurement.

“These documents – vital to the development of an industry-wide standard pathway towards net-zero carbon events – represent the largest, most inclusive collaboration across the events industry ever achieved, with the Net Zero Carbon Events initiative being supported and endorsed by UNFCCC [United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change],” says James Rees, president of JMIC.

“This achievement is the result of the hard work of more than 100 industry volunteers whose support, added together, represents many years of working time to develop, critique and finalise these guidance documents to be used in practice and improve upon over time as NZCE evolves.”

JMIC members include the International Association of Professional Congress Organizers (IAPCO), International Association of Convention Centres (AIPC), International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) and UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry.

“The expertise within the workstream teams has been of the highest level, including senior operations and sustainability experts from event organisers, venues and service suppliers across the world,” says Alexander Alles, executive director of JMIC.
