World’s Funniest Island launched for 2010

The World’s Funniest Island second annual comedy event was launched on Tuesday at Sydney’s Laugh Garage with all the expected antics and comedic hosts.

The two-day event returns on October 16 and 17 on Cockatoo Island in Sydney and will feature more than 200 performers on 16 stages from
the cream of Australian comedy talent as well as some international stars. The event will pack in everything from top comics, sketch shows, comedy burlesque and cabaret to the best of campus comedy.

Once again, World’s Funniest Island will transform the former colonial prison and naval dockyard, utilising the unique buildings, tunnels and bomb shelters into the island of hilarity. Comedy fans can attend for one day, two days and even camp for a night or two.
 


Comedian’s Heath ‘Chopper’ Frankin, Fiona O’Loughlin, Christa Huges and Claire Hooper will all be headlining at the event.
 
International talent includes Police Academy legend Michael Winslow, the return of the hit show ‘Allah Made Me Funny,’ five-time Emmy Award nominee Will Durst and six of the hottest young US up-and-comers.

Aussie headliners include The Umbilical Brothers, Wil Anderson, Beached Az Live, Julia Morris, Fiona O’Loughlin, Heath “Chopper” Franklin, Axis of Awesome, Tom Ballard, Tom Gleeson, Mikey Robbins, Claire Hooper and Christa Hughes in Beer Drinking Woman.

“This really is a chance to sample the best of the year in comedy. There’s new stuff from old friends, big favourites and amazing new talent from all over the world,” said the event’s creative director, John Pinder. “And there’s art, booze, food, camping out and spectacular harbour views to contemplate if you need to calm down amidst all the mayhem.”

“There is no doubt the event is offering something very different with some of the best local and international comedians performing on one of our most fantastic harbour islands.

“Events like World’s Funniest Island are what set Sydney apart as an events destination, it’s a major event that makes the most of Cockatoo Island and attracts both Sydneysiders and visitors. World’s Funniest Island is bound to become the preeminent comedy event in Australia,” he said.

World’s Funniest Island is presented by Australian Comedy Festival, Chugg Entertainment and Jigsaw Entertainment. The NSW Government through Events NSW is a major supporter of World’s Funniest Island.

The event is listed on the NSW Master Events Calendar alongside a range of vibrant arts and entertainment events highlighting Sydney’s creative energy. Special ferries run day and night all weekend and are included in the ticket price.
