Following two months of renovations, Sydney’s Ocean Room re-opened with a spectacular event on Tuesday (Sep 22) showcasing its new interior and a 66 kilogram fish.
The event, held in conjunction with Time Out Sydney magazine, showcased the sophisticated space and cutting edge menu to event organisers, media, marketing agencies, clients and special guests.
The event saw over 600 attendees packed out the venue and were entertained by drumming group TaikOz, however the true spectacle of the evening was a 66 kg blue fin tuna, delivered through the crowd from a Port Lincoln tuna farm on the Eyre Peninsula. The fish was filleted by samurai sword and served to salivating guests.

The restaurant venue, transformed by award-winning designer Yasumichi Morita’s is a reflection of the Ocean Room philosophy: Japanese traditions meeting the modern world.
Meticulously created, the new Ocean Room design is all about detail – from the soaring curved ceiling feature to the series of port-hole light features inset in the walls. Drawing upon ancient wooden elements and a grand chandelier motif, Ocean Room evokes a sense of old-world grandeur while also providing a glamorous, intimate space for discerning guests and diners.

Internationally renowned mixologist Andey Penney created an exclusive cocktail list for the new Ocean Room, with each drink inspired by Japan’s seven gods of fortune. Penney’s list pays tribute to his time at award-winning bars across the globe including Milk & Honey in New York and Atlantic Bar in London.
“Ocean Room’s ‘lucky god’ cocktail list draws on traditional Japanese flavours but it also has a modern twist,” said Penney. “Each of the seven drinks are a stand alone experience – and they each pack their own unique punch.” Backed by a rockstar bar team, Penney will bring a truly global experience to Ocean Room.
The venue is reported to be experiencing a surge in event bookings just days after the event. Organisers are invited to contact Anthony Tam on 02 9252 9585 for more information on holding an event at Ocean Room.
