Musician will.i.am is known for pushing boundaries in the integration of music and technology, but his newest collaboration will turn an entire building into a musical instrument for Vivid Sydney 2012.
Intel’s director of creative innovation, will.i.am will participate in an interactive light and music collaboration on the façade of the refurbished Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) created by Sydney digital arts company Spinifex using technology powered by the Intel 3rd Generation processor family as well as working with Sydney-based Technical Direction Company (TDC).
Musician will.i.am will participate in a unique interactive music collaboration using Sydney’s MCA as a musical instrument for Vivid Sydney.
Billed as a world first, the installation will allow festival-goers to literally ‘play the building’ via a purpose-built interface that interacts with will.i.am’s music and the projections of renowned Sydney artist Justene Williams, whose performative style is particularly suited to the collaboration.Using arm and hand gestures, the public can direct the artwork and rearrange will.i.am’s loops and samples, controlling the tone and chord progression.
“The MCA is going to become an instrument for the people of Sydney to play,” said will.i.am.
“The project illustrates the magic that can be created when innovative minds and technology come together.”
Intel Australia’s General Manager, Kate Burleigh said Intel was delighted to partner with Vivid Sydney for the second year running and thrilled to bring global creative icon will.i.am to Australian shores for the festival.
“Through Vivid Sydney and will.i.am’s creativity, we hope to show the amazing things that can be created with technology,” said Burleigh.“will.i.am is not only an incredible artist, he’s also an innovator who, like Intel,is always looking for new ways to communicate, inform and entertain. We believe that the installation at the MCA will be one of the showstoppers of this year’s festival.”
The MCA installation will be one of the highlights of a free light show happening around The Rocks, Circular Quay, Sydney Opera House and Walsh Bayfrom 6pm to midnight every night during Vivid Sydney.
