Federation Square ‘Lights Up’ this winter with world first

Melbourne's annual celebration of community and light, The Light in Winter returns to Federation Square from 4 June to 4 July 2010 with a world first

Melbourne’s annual celebration of community and light, The Light in Winter returns to Federation Square from 4 June to 4 July 2010.

Directed by Robyn Archer, this free winter program will cast a warm glow over the grey skies of Melbourne, with a month-long series of light-based artwork, a mid-winter Solstice celebration, community events and forums with leading illumination and digital artists.

Open to the public, The Light In Winter event will again illuminate Federation Square

In a major coup for the city, Federation Square has also commissioned a new work for The Light in Winter by celebrated Mexican electronic artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. While Lozano-Hemmer has toured the world with his many works, this will mark his Australian debut and the world premiere of his new installation, to be launched on 4 June.

Now in its fourth year, The Light in Winter celebrates shared cultural experiences, bringing together artists, designers and communities to explore ideas of light, enlightenment and hope.

In the midst of a black-clad Melbourne winter, the Light in Winter will bring splashes of colour to the city, with a unique mix of community heart and technical wizardry.

The Light in Winter will be switched on at Federation Square on Friday 4th June 2010. The full program details to be announced shortly via the website.
