Applications are now open to receive up to $30,000 in seed funding to host an event in Frankston City in the 2016-2017 financial year, as part of the city’s new Tourism Event Attraction Program.

According to Frankston City Mayor James Dooley, Frankston has a growing reputation for hosting major events of a national and international standard and the opportunities the new program will bring will only further cement this reputation.

“We invite major and regional tourism, conference and business event operators to tap into the exciting opportunities now available in our city,” said Dooley.

Frankston City currently hosts a number of events that attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, including the annual Sand Sculpting exhibition on the Frankston Waterfront, the Frankston Waterfront Festival, Christmas Festival of Lights, Festival of Rugby and the Bloody Big Swim.

Dooley said, “Events and festivals all contribute to the economic development and prosperity of the city, resulting in direct and indirect employment opportunities. They also attract year-round visitors, boost repeat visitation and encourage visitors to explore different parts of our region.

“The Tourism Event Attraction Program will create further opportunities for the community, visitors and businesses to connect and celebrate, improving liveability, social relationships and community pride.”

The program is targeted towards tourism events rather than community events, with an emphasis on those which highlight the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula tourism experience and product.

“Ultimately, we want the applicants to come to us with events that attract interstate and international visitors and encourage overnight stays in our city,” said Dooley.

Frankston City Council’s Tourism Event Attraction Program will offer seed funding in three different categories:
• Significant/major event: Up to $30,000
• Regional small scale event: Up to $10,000
• Business events and conferences: Up to $10,000

“If we receive a number of outstanding applications, these funding pools may be shared between different event operators,” said the Mayor.

Applications close on Friday 18 March.
