In a tourism coup, English premier league team Liverpool FC has announced that it will play two games down under.
Liverpool FC, one of the best-known and supported soccer clubs in the world, will be playing Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on July 17 and at playing Adelaide United at Adelaide Oval on July 20.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the Liverpool FC fixture against Brisbane Roar again highlighted Brisbane’s ability to stage major sporting events.
“Following world-class events such as the Brisbane International, AFC Asian Cup and ICC Cricket World Cup fixtures, Liverpool FC’s visit will once again showcase Brisbane as an international sporting events destination,” said Quirk.
“I look forward to our city welcoming an influx of Liverpool FC fans and football supporters from across Australia and international destinations as we see Liverpool stars and our Brisbane Roar heroes take to the field at Suncorp Stadium.”
South Australia’s acting tourism minister Tom Koutsantonis said hosting Liverpool at Adelaide Oval is a coup for the state.
Koutsantonis said, “A stadium packed with Reds fans from throughout Australia and the world will be a magnificent showcase for the Adelaide Oval and South Australia.
“Such world-class sporting events are huge draw cards, and we also anticipate a global TV audience for the game, so it is the perfect platform to showcase Adelaide to the rest of the world,” he said.
