Little Succers: A new style of team building arrives in Sydney

'Plant parents' are bound to fall in love with this new event studio.

On a busy corner in Neutral Bay on Sydney’s Lower North Shore, a bold neon sign hangs in the window of a once vacant shopfront stating: ‘Because flowers die’.

Behind the tongue-in-cheek motto, Little Succers has set up shop, appealing to a growing population of ‘plant parents’ and inviting them to design and create their own terrarium inside the colourful venue.

With capacity for up to 20 people per session, Little Succers offers small teams the opportunity to get their hands dirty in a fun team-building exercise they likely haven’t done before.

Here, we spoke to Little Succers founder Tara Shelton to hear how the business started and what’s on offer for corporate teams.

How long has Little Succers been around and where did the idea come from?

Little Succers started in 2017 when I asked myself, why would people send flowers when they die? Succulents on the other hand, last as long as you neglect them. So I launched Little Succers initially as a same-day delivery succulent service.

When I wanted to expand to sending terrariums, I realised they were way too fragile to send, so instead I thought I could host an event where people come and make their own terrarium.

This led me to launching ‘Build Your Own Terrarium Bar’ as a pop-up which ran every couple of months for over two years. Finally I took the plunge to open my own permanent events studio in Neutral Bay. Now I can be available to take private bookings which is great!

Tell us about your new Neutral Bay digs and what people can expect when they book a class?

When you book a class you will be invited to join a 90-minute session where the workshop host will explain all the steps to building a terrarium. The room is set up like a buffet, lolly bar style so you can pick and mix whatever you want to make your own unique creation.

There are heaps of vases to choose from, loads of decorative layers of coloured sands and pebbles, the essentials like soil, charcoal and lots of succulent varieties. We also have decorations to style up your terrarium at the end, like crystals, flamingos, unicorns, dinosaurs – you name it! Our host will guide you every step of the way, but we have many proud plant parents at the end of each session.

Talk us through what a corporate team building event would look like at Little Succers?

A corporate team building event runs much the same as our regular event except you get two hours instead of 90 minutes, so you can take your time and socialise too. You are welcome to BYO drinks and nibbles or we can arrange catering for you. We are really flexible and can accommodate any other requests you may have.

Why do you think the experience would appeal to the corporate market?

Because it is so much fun and the team will learn a new skill, connect with nature and make something truly beautiful for their home or office. It encourages creativity and everyone’s terrarium is a reflection of their own personality, sparking lots of conversations!
