Construction of W Sydney is set to recommence soon after Australian property developer Greaton appointed Multiplex to complete The Ribbon development in Darling Harbour.
Construction of The Ribbon, which includes the luxury hotel, IMAX theatre and retail precinct, came to a grinding halt earlier this year when the previous builder, Probuild, went into administration.
Multiplex will complete the remaining works on the site, which mostly centre around internal fit-out, and public domain works at the Darling Harbour precinct.
“The Ribbon is one of the most complex new major developments currently underway in Sydney and occupies public land right on the harbour foreshore,” Greaton project director Michael Calvi said.
Calvi said Multiplex, which built the original IMAX theatre some 25 years ago, was “the clear frontrunner” for the project.
Marriott International first announced the long-awaited return of the W brand to Sydney in June 2018, with the hotel predicted to open in 2020.
W Sydney will feature 585 guestrooms, suites and studio suites, a two-storey rooftop bar, heated infinity pool, spa, gym, all-day dining restaurant and bar. Earlier this year, Marriott shared the first look of the hotel’s event spaces.
Subcontractor partners, including Buildcorp for the interior fit-out works, will continue to be involved in the remainder of the project.
