Sydneysiders are now able to get a taste of Wellington on their doorstep with the opening of WLG, a unique ‘pop up’ restaurant in Kings Cross which opened on September 14 until the 26th, showcasing the finest talent and top local produce that New Zealand’s epicurean capital has to offer.
Unprecedented demand led to WLG becoming the fastest-selling Australian restaurant on the Time Out Sydney website ever – with over 1,500 places selling within four hours, and a subsequent second release of 200 tickets snapped up in under 30 minutes on 1st September additionally a number of walk-in seats are available each night throughout the two week event.
Four of New Zealand’s top food personalities will be taking control of the pop up restaurant with different menus
Four highly renowned New Zealand food personalities will be WLG’s ‘chefs in residence’, taking control of the kitchen for 3-4 days each and delivering different menus that will reflect the seasonal nature of New Zealand’s top restaurants. Some of Wellington’s best wait staff and baristas will also be at WLG to provide diners with an authentic Wellington experience.
WLG features Wellington’s best fresh produce, with many of the ingredients brought over from New Zealand especially for the pop up restaurant, including locally sourced olive oils, coffee, cheeses, chocolate and seafood.
Sydney locals still have time to taste some of the finest drops that Wellington’s surrounding wine regions, Marlborough to the south and the Wairarapa to the north, have to offer.
For those that are not hungry enough for a three course feast, the WLG wine bar will also offer NZ Wine and Cheese from local Wellington Region Providores for $15 per person. No bookings are required for the wine bar. Wine growers and sommeliers from New Zealand will be flying over especially for WLG and will join visitors in the WLG garden bar to discuss their wines.
“The pop up restaurant in Sydney is a great way to demonstrate that Marlborough wine is not only the perfect complement to Wellington inspired dishes, the region is also the perfect complement to the Wellington city experience for Australian travellers,” said Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston.
According to Brad Monaghan, Australia marketing manager at Positively Wellington Tourism, WLG will attract wine and food experts in equal measure.
“The wine bar is a great way to start off the evening for people dining at WLG, whilst also providing a nice venue for punters to stop by for a drink after work or on a lazy weekend afternoon,” Monaghan said. “We encourage patrons to have a chat with the wine growers and the restaurant owners, baristas, chef’s and front of house staff that have made the trip from Wellington to work at WLG.”
WLG is located at 32 Bayswater Rd, Kings Cross (old Bayswater Brasserie) and will be open for dinner from 6pm till 10pm. The four ‘chefs in residence’ are Jacob Brown (The Larder), Shaun Clouston (Logan Brown), Tom Hutchison (Capitol) and Rex Morgan (Boulcott Street Bistro).
