Event in the spotlight: 2022 Charles Brownlow Medal

JAK Creative & Events were in charge of styling one of sport's finest and most elegant annual events.

More 1,200 of the Australian Football League’s (AFL) finest talent and their loved ones gathered at the Palladium at Crown Melbourne on 18 September in celebration of the 2022 Charles Brownlow Medal count.

Working to a black and gold theme, the team at JAK Creative & Events were in charge of styling the event, pulling together exquisite design elements to truly set the scene for one of sport’s finest and most elegant annual events.

How was JAK Creative & Events involved in the event?

We had the delight of bringing the AFL’s inspiration together into a polished Black and Gold themed event. We designed all aspects of the internal Media Wall, the Palladium Entrance Feature and the table centrepieces to create a glamorous, coherent, look throughout.

What were the highlights of the event?

Our completely custom designed and produced 10-metre Media Wall was definitely a highlight for both us and our client. We were all committed to elevating the idea of a traditional media wall for this event and were thrilled with the outcome.

For us, seeing our hard work and inspiration come to life is always one of the biggest highlights. Working with the truly superb team at AFL and side by side with our fabulous colleagues for such a big night was an absolute pleasure.

What were some of the challenges and how did you handle them?

The challenge for this one was that the Brownlow Medal count was originally scheduled for Monday 19th September. When the news came that the broadcasting of the Queen’s funeral was also scheduled for that same night, everything had to change. FAST. With approximately 10 days to spare, this massive event and every component that went along with it had to be brought forward by one day. Not an easy feat for those in the know! Part of the wonder of the Brownlow is the televising of both the count itself as well as the Red Carpet regalia. Competing with the Queen’s Funeral would have been lunacy and not televising the Brownlow was not an option.

What was the feedback like from guests/clients?

When you hear from the venue staff it’s the best one they’ve seen so far, it’s hard to ignore! They see a lot of events, and many of them have seen a lot of Brownlows too. We received incredible feedback from our clients as well, with the Shimmer Wall design being a particular favourite with guests.
