New Newcastle Convention Bureau (NCB) head Georgia Murphy has joined the organisation in one of the city’s busiest years, with confirmed conference and event activity for 2011 equating to more than 20,000 room nights and an overall economic impact in excess of $6.5 million.
A range of domestic and international events feature on Newcastle’s 2011 calendar, including the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy’s New Leaders’ Conference (May 4-8), Homebirth Australia’s National Conference (August 19-21) and the Australasian Society of Aerospace Medicine Association’s Annual Scientific Meeting (October 6-8).
Newcastle Convention Bureau is gearing up for its busiest conference and event year yet in 2011.
“The NCB has been receiving a number of enquiries for bookings in the second half of the year of late, indicating the trend towards short lead times is not yet waning,” she said.
“A large portion of enquiries have been for domestic, small- to medium-sized events, for which Newcastle offers a great variety of options in terms of both accommodation and events venues. We’re really looking forward to adding events to our calendar before the year is out. ”
Murphy joined the NCB earlier this year as the business tourism and conventions developer, bringing 15 years of experience in the events industry to the role, previously heading up the sales team at Civic Precinct Newcastle, managing venues such as Newcastle City Hall, Civic Theatre, The Playhouse and Fort Scratchley.

“It’s a fantastic destination for meetings and conferences of all shapes and sizes and I’m delighted to be playing a key role in spreading this word.”
Georgia has joined the Bureau in the same year Newcastle was named one of the top 10 cities in the world by Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2011.
