The iconic “hub” of Airlie Beach is back up and running following the reopening of the Airlie Lagoon last week.
Crews have worked tirelessly to repair the Whitsundays’ landmark attraction since it was damaged in Tropical Cyclone Debbie, in March, including carrying out upgrades to the facility at the same time.
The reopening comes just as spring starts and ensures that holidaymakers in the spring school holidays won’t be denied a dip in the briny waters of the year-round swimming facility that forms the central “hub” of the vibrant seaside town.
Tourism Whitsundays Sales & Marketing Manager Tash Wheeler said it was great to see the Airlie Lagoon back up and running as it was something that gave so many people so much pleasure.
“The Airlie Lagoon is an extremely popular, free community facility enjoyed by both locals and holidaymakers and it looks better than ever after a major refresh,” she said.
“Everyone who worked on the project is to be congratulated – they have achieved huge results in the timeframe and it’s great to have our lagoon back as we head into spring and summer.
“As if the Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach aren’t strong enough attractions, we now have our beloved Airlie Lagoon back to encourage people to book their next holiday in the Whitsundays!”
Refurbishments to the lagoon included a completely new pool surface, new tiling around the edges of the pool, resurfacing of the pedestrian bridge across the lagoon and new footpaths.
Landscaping and shade sail projects are still underway, with completion expected in the next few months. Whitsunday Regional Council will then host a community event to officially celebrate the reopening.
Whitsunday Mayor Andrew Willcox said Council’s team and all contractors involved did a fantastic job to the get the project completed on time.
“We are very pleased with the excellent work from local company Splash Constructions, and everyone else who worked to repair and improve the lagoon precinct,” he said.
“It has been a huge job, and to have the lagoon ready to reopen in time for warmer weather and school holidays is great.”
