The Calile Hotel, in Brisbane, is ranked 25 on the list, with The Tasman, in Hobart, coming in at number 49.

Launched in 2023, The World’s 50 Best Hotels list is compiled by The World’s 50 Best Hotels Academy, an influential group of more than 600 independent industry leaders, with each member selected for their expert opinions on the international hotel scene.

According to the organisers, the list “promises to create the most egalitarian, useful and transparent hotel ranking system ever devised”.

“The anonymous and neutral voting members of the Academy include hoteliers, travel journalists, seasoned luxury travellers, hospitality professionals and other experienced globetrotters,” says Tim Brooke-Webb, managing director of The World’s 50 Best Hotels Academy.

“While there is no set criteria for voters, there are strict voting rules ensuring the credibility and integrity of the list as a world-leading resource for discerning travellers.”

The 2024 awards were presented on 17 September, 2024, with the two Aussie hotels featuring among some of the most outstanding properties worldwide.

With Brisbane booming as a tourism and business events destination, The Calile Hotel’s accolade brings increased attention to the Queensland capital as the world turns its attention towards the city ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games.

The achievement marks the second consecutive year The Calile Hotel has featured on the list – it was ranked 12th in 2023 – and it was also named best hotel in Oceania this year.

“To be selected two years in a row marks a significant affirmation of The Calile’s place on the global hotel industry stage,” says The Calile Hotel’s co-owner, Catherine Malouf, who attended the awards ceremony in London.

The Calile Hotel’s general manager, Chris Kemlo, echoes the sentiment of the venue flying the flag for Australian hospitality and tourism.

Centrally located on Hobart’s waterfront, The Tasman is an elegant heritage reconstruction of former state government offices.

The hotel brings together three eras of design – Georgian, Art Deco and contemporary – and features 152 guest rooms and suites, signature restaurant Peppina, and intimate cocktail bar Mary Mary.

In 2025, The Tasman will welcome a new events space with capacity for 180 seated guests.

The number one spot in The World’s 50 Best Hotels list for 2024 went to Capella Bangkok (up from number 11 in 2023), followed by Passalacqua, on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como at number two (down from number one in 2023), and Rosewood Hong Kong at number three.
