SkyCity Entertainment Group now has until the end of 2027 to complete the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC), currently under construction in Auckland.
SkyCity and the New Zealand Government have agreed to extend the ‘long stop date’ for the project’s completion from 2 January 2025 to 15 December 2027.
While the latest draft program from Fletcher Construction indicates a completion date for late 2024, SkyCity considers it prudent to have a buffer between the program date and the long stop date.
The construction of the centre was initially delayed in October 2019, after a fire broke out on the venue’s roof that lasted several days.
Following the incident, Fletcher Construction CEO Ross Taylor said the construction company was adamant on completing the project.
“We are all devastated to see the project we have worked so hard on impacted this way and while our timeline will change, our resolve will not – and together with SkyCity we remain committed to delivering a world-class convention centre for Auckland and New Zealand,” he said.
SkyCity and Fletcher Construction said they both remain committed to completing the NZICC as soon as possible.
Once complete, NZICC will offer 32,500 square metres of floor space across 33 distinct meeting spaces, ideal for all types of business events.
