MCET launches Accessibility Action Plan

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Trust has unveiled its latest Accessibility Action Plan to ensure safe, welcoming and inclusive experiences for all event attendees at its venues.

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Trust (MCET) operates the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) and the upcoming Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre, which will open in 2026.

With the World Health Organization estimating 16 per cent of people globally have a severe disability, addressing barriers to accessing public spaces and events is paramount.

MCET acknowledges these barriers stem from social systems and structures, rather than individual limitations, and plans to do something about it.

The new Accessibility Action Plan has four key goals: improving employment opportunities for people with disabilities; improving access to goods, services and facilities at MCEC and Nyaal Banyul; collaborating with event organisers to ensure everyone can meaningfully participate and engage in events; and changing discriminatory attitudes, behaviours and practices.

MCEC has a range of accessible features for visitors with mobility needs, vision impairment and assisted hearing. Additionally, its new website adheres to WCAG 2.0 Level AA Accessibility Guidelines and provides virtual tours, helping visitors plan and navigate visits with ease.

During the next three years, MCET is committed to further enhancing accessibility at MCEC.

Construction of Nyaal Banyul, set to open on the Geelong waterfront in 2026, is underway. MCET is working closely with the Victorian Government and a consortium led by Plenary Conventions to embed Universal Design principles throughout the venue, ensuring accessible gathering spaces for all visitors.

Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos commends MCET, stating, “We’re proud to work with Melbourne Convention Exhibition Trust, and I congratulate MCET for its work on the Accessibility Action Plan that will help everyone who visits MCEC and Nyaal Banyul feel welcome.”

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Trust chief executive Natalie O’Brien AM adds, “As leaders in the events industry, it’s our duty to set the standard for accessibility and inclusion. We’re proud to release our latest Accessibility Action Plan, affirming our commitment to providing welcoming spaces for everyone who visits our venues.”
