The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) put Melbourne and Australia on the world stage, taking out the title of Australasia’s Leading Meetings and Conference Centre in the 2012 World Travel Awards on 19 October.
Hundreds of thousands of industry travel professionals voted in the awards announced at the World Travel Awards Asia & Australasia gala ceremony in Singapore.
The MCEC was named Australasia’s Leading Centre at the World Travel Awards held last week in Singapre.
MCEC was selected from eight nominated finalists from around Australia and New Zealand in the Asia and Australasia categories.
MCEC’s Chief Executive Peter King said he was extremely proud of the venue’s achievements.
“We have a world-class venue and a fantastic team who deliver an exceptional service to our customers, so it is wonderful to see this recognised within the travel and tourism industry,” King said.
MCEC will now represent Australasia in a final round of voting to decide who will triumph in World Travel Award’s world awards, the ultimate accolade in the travel and tourism industry, in December 2012.
MCEC is Australia’s leading venue for business events and the latest International Congress and Convention Association figures ranked Melbourne as the number one destination for business travellers.
In July 2014 MCEC will host the largest medical conference ever to be held in Australia, International AIDS Conference, which is expected to bring 14,000 delegates and generate an estimated $80 million in economic impact for the state of Victoria.
