Keg and Brew licensee Simon ‘Wombat’ Kraegen
The old KB Hotel on Foveaux Street has been transformed into a Southern American haven of bourbon, beer and tasty bites.
Keg and Brew licensee Simon ‘Wombat’ Kraegen said, “After months of renovations, we can’t wait to get the locals back in to see what we’ve done with the place. The Keg & Brew is all about the love of good beer. We want to give people a chance to try the excellent new brewers of Australia, while also offering the old classics, some tasty bourbon and honest pub food at a great price. We’re not here to be wanky about beer, we just love it and think others will too.”
A rotating selection of 30 taps feature a huge range of Australian craft beers, cider and six classics including Australia’s favourite classics Reschs, VB and Carlton. There are also three traditional hand-pumped craft beers. Over 30 different types of bourbon are on offer, served one of three ways – neat, on the rocks or as one of three traditional bourbon cocktails.
Many of the original heritage features of the pub remain, including the wall tiles and grand central bar, with the addition of some tongue-in-cheek spaghetti western styling including cowboy-inspired wallpaper, soft brown leather banquettes, cowhide panels, stuffed animal heads and the occasional portrait of Dolly Parton.
Food is provided by head chef Devendra Sherchan, formerly sous chef at the Dove and Olive, who has brought his much-loved traditional pub food to the venue with a new deep South American twist. Bites range from snack-style Fixin’s to the heartier Grub and Grill selections. Signature dishes include Big Tex bacon bites, KBFC, Kentucky Bourbon Black Angus rump and Philly cheese steak. There are also a number of vegetarian and vegan dishes including a vegan maple glazed polenta cake. The dessert menu includes items such as the deep fried Twinkie served with chocolate fondue and sprinkles.
The Keg and Brew is located at 26 Foveaux St, Surry Hills NSW.
