Grill Americano coming to Sydney

Restauranteur Chris Lucas is expanding the footprint of his Italian restaurant, Grill Americano, by opening a site in Sydney.

A famed restaurant in Melbourne’s Flinders Lane, Grill Americano is known for its Venetian fare and white-jacket service, and Sydney will see a local iteration opening at historic Qantas House in the CBD in September 2025.

On the back of four major openings in 2024, Chris Lucas (pictured above, left) and his wife and design collaborator, Sarah Lucas (pictured above, right), will open their second Sydney venue when Grill Americano commences serving guests.

Qantas House – now known as No. 1 Chifley Square – will be home to the couple’s latest heritage restoration, following Chin Chin Sydney in the Griffiths Tea building, and Maison Bâtard in the home of 1927 Italian Society in Melbourne.

The Qantas House site is a celebrated mid-century building – designed by Felix Tavener in the 1950s – with its glass curtain facade a feature.

Sarah Lucas will lead interior design of the new Sydney project, collaborating with creative director Samantha Eades (pictured above, centre) from Mitchell & Eades, who also worked on Grill Americano Melbourne and French restaurant Maison Bâtard.

Ruaridh Macdonald has been appointed restaurant manager and Damian Snell is general manager of culinary.

“I’ve always had a love for heritage buildings, and the opportunity to restore iconic Qantas House is truly special,” says Chris Lucas.

“Like the Griffiths Tea building, which we sensitively revitalised in 2017, this historic treasure offers the perfect home for Grill Americano Sydney.

“Its architectural beauty and timeless glass facade provide an elegant backdrop to bring the restaurant to life.

“Since opening Chin Chin in Surry Hills, we’ve been embraced by the city and played a role in its vibrant dining evolution.

“Sarah and I are thrilled to add another chapter to our journey in Sydney, honouring its heritage while shaping its future food culture.”
