Canberra’s new lakeside functions centre

A new functions and events centre has arrived on the shores of Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin, with Red Shed opening its doors.

Located at Black Mountain Peninsula, five minutes’ drive from Canberra’s CBD, Red Shed has been built for the community by locals with a passion for rowing.

The venue features a functions area overlooking Lake Burley Griffin, a rowing shed, wellness centre, gym, co-working space and cafe.

Immersed in nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the functions space caters for up to 200 people theatre-style or cocktail, 120 with cabaret layout, or 160 banquet style.

Red Shed also has a balcony entertaining area and features state-of-the-art facilities, including the latest audiovisual technology.

Operating as a not-for-profit, Red Shed is dedicated to making rowing accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, identity or socioeconomic background.

“The idea was not to put another rowing club on the lake that is only accessible to a few people, but rather to have a club for everyone,” says John Gasson, who has funded Red Shed with his wife, Jeanette.

“To make it viable, we are offering this space for corporate functions with the knowledge the dollars earned will mean people who would never have been able to get on the lake to enjoy this magnificent sport will now be able to.”

Occasioni by Agostinis of Bisa Hospitality is the onsite catering team, bringing authentic and contemporary Italian cuisine to the venue.

“The opportunity to hold events right on Lake Burley Griffin’s edge was one we couldn’t resist,” says Dion Bisa, brand director at Bisa Hospitality.

“The view at Red Shed is spectacular, and it is such a unique venue for corporate events.”
