With International Women’s Day taking place this month, it’s a poignant reminder of the significant challenges women and girls face around the world.
This Thursday, Australian-based global charity SolarBuddy is celebrating IWD with One Light Only, a virtual fundraising event that will shine a light on the millions of women and girls living in extreme energy poverty.
The online event will feature a stellar line-up of musical talent, including two-time ARIA Award winner artist Megan Washington, former INXS front man Ciaran Gribbin and Mama Kin (Danielle Caruana), one of Australia’s most charming singer-songwriters.
Australian comedian and impersonator Ben Price will emcee the event and will be joined by other national treasures including mentalist and magician Adam Axford and speed painter Sarah Rowan.
With tickets priced at just $30, all proceeds will go towards providing life-changing SolarBuddy lights to girls across the world, helping to end the cycle of poverty in which they are born into.
SolarBuddy festival programs manager Tara Williams said the team is excited to bring One Light Only to life.
“It is inspiring to see some Aussie favourites coming together to support what we do in this new and exciting way,” she says.
“Just one ticket will literally make a lifetime of difference.”
According to UNICEF, in 2019 there were an estimated 132 million girls out of school. On top of this, UNESCO revealed the impacts of COVID-19 prevented a further 1.5 billion children from attending school, some of whom won’t return.
Through this virtual fundraising festival, SolarBuddy is aiming to raise $50,000, which will provide 1,563 solar lights for girls, will positively impact more than 7,800 lives and reduce families’ expenditure on kerosene by up to 80 per cent.
