New venue opens in Sydney’s Haymarket district


Sydney-siders have found themselves a new dining and entertainment option-Yardhouse Bar and Brasserie located in Haymarket. Formerly known as Paddy McGuires pub, a major refurbishment undertaken by the venue’s owner, Metro Hospitality Group, has transformed the site into a stylish and contemporary venue while still paying homage to the heritage of the area, particularly the old Palace Hotel which once occupied the site.


With upto 125 years history sealed into a modern, fun venue and filled with up to 60 various types of beer was The Yardhouse is designed to be the one stop shop for new and traditional patrons after work and on the weekends.

Metro Hospitality Group chief operating officer, George Bedwani, said the ‘Yardhouse’ name was inspired by the popular beer drinking vessel of the 1800s, the yard glass, while the front bar off George Street has been renamed the Palace Bar and will continue to appeal to the traditional patrons of the area who enjoy a drink after work.

“Yardhouse Bar and Brasserie is an exciting new venue in Sydney’s entertainment precinct,” said Bedwani. “We wanted to ensure the venue retained links to its important heritage while also expanding its offering to appeal to a broader clientele.”

Code Design interior designer Sophie Collis said the new design of the old Palace Hotel embraces the rich history of the building. “Yardhouse will always be an important landmark in Sydney. The charm of its history, and the warmth created through its restoration provides a unique dining and drinking environment.”

With seating for 118 patrons, a contemporary brasserie forms the heart of the venue. The interior design carries through aspects of the heritage-style Palace Bar with accents of dark timber and polished brass, with the addition of intimate seating areas and lounges. A soft palette of mauve and warm timbers, lamps, mirrors and original photographs of George Street from 1905 create a homely environment.

Daniel Collins, previously Head Chef at the Russell Hotel and Wine Bar in Sydney, has created a Brasserie menu that includes light meals to tempt pre-theatre patrons as well as hearty fare for its business clientele.

While the lighter pre-theatre menu includes such dishes as spiced calamari with Szechuan pepper salt, chilli, coriander and citrus aioli or Beef and James Squire Porter pot pie, the full brasserie menu has a selection of four different steaks (including a 300g Wagyu rump), four types of skewers (each with a different international heritage) and six mains including slow-braised pork belly, Queensland spanner crab linguine and crisp skin salmon with tomato, white bean and fennel.

The Palace Bar has been refurbished and partially reconstructed in its original location and the timber features of the bar restored to their original finery. More than 60 craft beers are available, on tap and in the bottle, while an all-day bar menu is available.

Offering a variety a entertainment option patrons can enjoy an evening with their favourite artists and musical tributes to current and departed artists, including Joe Cocker, Blues Brothers, Dr John, Barry White, Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye.

A downstairs area has been created specifically for live music. Reggae bands will be featured on Monday evenings while rock bands are expected to prove a popular option for patrons on Friday and Saturday evenings. All areas can be hired for private functions, providing an opportunity for corporate event managers to combine an evening at the theatre with pre-theatre dinner and drinks in a designated area, or a post-show nightcap.
