Premier Brumby to Open MCEC in June

By Gwen O’Toole

The combined Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) will be officially opened next month (June) by Victorian Premier John Brumby, creating Australia’s largest convention and exhibition district.

Built adjacent to the existing Melbourne Exhibition Centre, the first major international event, the 7th International Conference on Geomorphology, will be held from July 6-11 with another 49 major international conventions booked to follow.

Brumby will open the Melbourne Convention Centre

The only convention centre in the world to hold a six-star green star environmental rating, the Centre has a 5,000 seat plenary hall that can be divided into three self-contained, acoustically separate theatres and an entry level foyer capable of hosting 8,400 guests.

“We’re particularly proud of our ability to offer the most sophisticated, but easy to use audio visual communications and information technology with self-manageable capabilities, at no additional cost,” said Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre chief executive Leigh Harry.
