Etihad Airways is ramping up its Melbourne presence in the lead-up to the launch of new flights to the Victorian capital with the announcement today (October 23) of a five-year sponsorship of the famed Telstra Dome.

The popular events venue will be known as Etihad Stadium from the kick off of the AFL season on March 1, 2009, just weeks before the airline launches non-stop daily flights between Melbourne and Abu Dhabi from March 30.

Etihad Airways CEO James Hogan says sports sponsorship is important to the airline’s marketing strategy going forward.

Melbourne will be Etihad’s third destination in Australia and comes on the back of successful launches of flights to Sydney and Brisbane.
